164. Why Your Goals Are Probably Setting You Up to Burn Out Again

I know the feeling all too well amiga. You set a big goal you lock-in for a week maybe one month tops and then you find yourself tired, overwhelmed and burn out because you went all-in without a realistic plan.

But what is a realistic plan?

You’ve heard it before, our goals shouldn’t feel realistic, but I would argue that this exact mentality is sometimes killing our momentum and leaving us burnt out.

I recently expedited this myself. I was ready to put it all to rest for the summer, I thought what if I just took the summer off? No posting. No podcast episodes, no weekly email. Just me and my babies making memories without me having to think about, “what am I going to post today?” And honestly I was deeply craving that pause.

But what did I do instead? I decided to join the YAP Challenge. Im not gonna lie, the FOMO got me. I have to give it to Jesse Jean, she is a GREAT marketer and although I don’t regret joining the challenge I do regret not listening to my intuition.

This was burnout disguised as ambition.

Because so many times we are so hard on ourselves for not showing up, for not staying consistent so we put more on our plate to feel worthy of the success we so deeply want.

The hustle, the pushing through felt like it would fix everything, but in reality what I needed was to slow down.

And no, it’s not too late to take the pause but I no longer crave it the way I did. You see my son started kindergarten now so I am not deeply overwhelmed like I was a few weeks ago.

In my latest podcast episode, I share with you how I shifted from setting goals that were setting me up for burn out to goals that are attainable in the season I am currently in: Taking care of an 11-month old full-time, and having a kindergartener at home.

I will be honest though, you might not like what you will hear on this episode, because this isn’t another “you got this, push through it”, “You can do all things with determination” conversation.

No, this episode will challenge you to pick ONE thing for the rest of the year, hone in on it and lock in without too many distractions.

This conversation will inspire you to get clear on what you actually want to focus on right now. Instead of encouraging you to take action on ALL of your ideas.

So here is what we are doing, we are setting goals together that will build momentum, not burn you out.

And some of the things you create will probably won’t be your best work.

But we will celebrate them and not feel like we should wait until we have the capacity to create our best work.
